The Results of the Mining & Metallurgical Complex of Ukraine Activity for 4 months 2020
According to UKRMETALURGPROM data, steelmaking enterprises in April 2020 produced:
- Agglomerate – 2.45 Mt (88.2% to April 2019);
- Coke – 0.76 Mt (85.6%);
- Pig Iron – 1.39 Mt (75.7%);
- Steel – 1.34 Mt (69.1%);
- Finished Products – 1.30 Mt (79.4%).
Such a decrease in production, first of all, is a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, and of the general adverse situation on steel markets.
In Jan-April 2020, steelmaking enterprises of Ukraine produced:
- Agglomerate – 10.31 Mt (96.7% to the same period of 2019);
- Coke – 3.22 Mt (91.8%);
- Pig Iron – 6.49 Mt (92.1%);
- Steel – 6.66 Mt (89.4%);
- Finished Products – 5.97 Mt (96.6%);
- Pipes&Tubes – 0.28 Mt (71.7%).
As of 14 May 2020, the following main production facilities are in operation: 16 of 21 Blast Furnaces, 4 of 8 OHFs, 11 of 16 BOFs, 6 of 15 EAFs and 15 of 16 concast machines.
The Provision of Enterprises with Main Raw and Energy Resources
Iron Ore Raw Materials (IORM)
Taking into consideration the low production of metal products, the provision of steelmaking enterprises with IORM in April 2020 was on the level matching the steelmakers’ demands. There was no import of IORM in April.
The IORM export in Jan-April 2020 was around 15.45 Mt (122% to Jan-April 2019).
Coking Coals
For 4 months 2020, Ukrainian coking plants received 4.33 Mt of coking coals (89% to the same period of 2019), of which:
- 27 Mt of the Ukrainian origin (153% to the same period of 2019);
- 06 Mt of imported (76% to the same period of 2019).
The import share in the total coking coals delivery in Jan-April 2020 is 70.7% against 85.0% in Jan-April 2019.
The Metallurgical Coke
The total coke delivery to steelmaking enterprises in Jan-April 2020 is 2.67 Mt (84% to Jan-April 2019), all is of the Ukrainian origin.
The import share in the total coke delivery for 4 months 2020 is 0% against 7.4% in Jan-April 2019.
The Bought Steel Scrap
For 4 months 2020, 913 Kt of steel scrap (88% to Jan-April 2019) were collected, of which 901 Kt (89 to the same period of 2019) had been delivered to the Ukrainian consumers. It was exported 12 Kt of steel scrap in Jan-April 2020 (41% to the same period of 2019).
The Natural Gas and Electricity
For 4 months 2020, the national steelmaking industry had consumed up to 580 million cubic meters of the natural gas (97% to the same period of 2019).
The electricity consuming by Ukrainian steelmaking enterprises in Jan-April 2020 is up to 3.55 billion kWh (92% to Jan-April 2019).
